In Ontario, driving without insurance or proof of insurance comes with some pretty severe consequences. These may include:

• A base fine of $5,000, plus an added 20% tax
• Charges of operating a vehicle without the required insurance coverage or failing to provide proof of insurance coverage
• Jail time

Generally, jail time is only reserved for repeat offenders. But you are almost guaranteed to receive a fine if you fail to provide proof of insurance when pulled over. Fortunately, Ontario has made it easier for drivers to show proof of insurance by making it permissible to show an electronic copy of your policy. That means you don’t have to carry a paper copy of your policy in your vehicle, as long as you can show proof of insurance on your phone or other mobile device.

This change is very convenient for drivers, but it doesn’t come without the potential for problems. For example, if you’re ever caught in an area without cell phone service, you may not be able to access your policy from your email. To avoid issues like this, download your policy onto your phone or take a picture of it in advance so you can access it whether you have cell phone service or not.
